Alpha® introduces the Diamond-clustered Spike Disc, which utilizes a new diamond technology where a multi-layer of high-quality diamond grits are vacuum-brazed into a clustered layer. This allows the removal of thick coating materials such as Epoxy and Urethane on concrete floors. During the Spike Disc operation, the coatings/materials are removed quickly, but without damage to the concrete surface, unlike PCD cup wheels, therefore saving time by eliminating the grinding process. The Spike Disc also has a unique open-mesh diamond layout to eliminate the clogging problems, thus avoiding the heat buildup that commonly burns the metal surfaces. Spike Discs can be used on steel, wood and other softer surfaces such as Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer. The Spike Disc is a must-have part of your restoration tooling!
Question : How long does the Spike Disc last compared with other abrasive products?
Answer : It depends on the application and the product as well as your definition of the end of life on a conventional abrasive since they don’t retain tool dimensions. General indication of life span is up to 50 to 60 times of the conventional abrasives.
Question : Can you remove sticky mastic or glue?
Answer : Yes, you can if the mastic or glue is very sticky, you may start experiencing clogging problems even on Spike Disc. Alpha® recommends grinding a concrete block or cinder block when you notice a slowdown of performance to remove sticky materials from the cutting edge.
Question : Can I use it with water to eliminate dust?
Answer : Yes, you can use Spike Disc with water to keep dust down.
Question : What is the difference in performance between Polycrystalline Diamond Cup Wheel and Spike Disc for coating removal?
Answer : Polycrystalline Diamond Cup Wheel (PCD cup wheel) has sharp scrapers as scraping teeth that may gauge concrete surface or leave heavy scratch marks. If you need to stain concrete or apply a new coat of paint, you have to grind the surface to make it flat then smooth the surface which is an additional step for the surface preparation.
Question : How do we eliminate dust during the application?
Answer : Alpha® offers the Ecoguard G which will retrofit on most industrial grade 4-1/2” and 5” grinders. You can use the HEPA vacuum in conjunction with Spike Disc and Ecoguard to enjoy virtually dust-free grinding application.
Question : Can I use it on Alpha® Ecogrinder with Square arbor?
Answer : Yes you can. Alpha® offers 5” Spike Disc suitable for ECG-125. (Part No. VCS503Q)
Question : What kind of tool can I use with Spike Disc?
Answer : You can use Spike Disc on High-Speed Angle Grinder, Sander and Polisher. The original flange & lock nut with the wrench provided work well or you can simply get Spike Disc with disposable zinc hub with 5/8”-11 female thread so that you can spin the disc on and off using the spindle lock.
